Huckleberry Finn As Idol and Target : The Functions of Criticism in Our Time (The Wisconsin Project on American Writers)
Jonathan Arac / Paperback / Published November 1997
Price: $14.36 - Savings of: $3.59 (20%) - Ships in 2-3 days
If racially offensive epithets are banned on CNN air time and in the pages of USA Today, Jonathan Arac asks, shouldnt a fair hearing be given to those who protest their use in an eighth-grade classroom? Placing Mark Twains comic masterpiece, Huckleberry Finn, in the context of long-standing American debates about race and culture, Jonathan Arac has written a work of scholarship in the service of citizenship. Huckleberry Finn, Arac points out, is Americas most beloved book, assigned in schools more than any other work because it is considered both the quintessential American novel and an important weapon against racism. But when some parents, students, and teachers have condemned the books repeated use of the word nigger, their protests have been vehemently and often snidely countered by cultural authorities, whether in the universities or in the New York Times and the Washington Post. The paradoxical result, Arac contends, is to reinforce racist structures in our society and to make a sacred text of an important book that deserves thoughtful reading and criticism. Arac does not want to ban Huckleberry Finn, but to provide a context for fairer, fuller, and better-informed debates. Arac shows how, as the Cold War began and the Civil Rights movement took hold, the American critics Lionel Trilling, Henry Nash Smith, and Leo Marx transformed the public image of Twains novel from a popular boys book to a central document of American culture. Hucks feelings of brotherhood with the slave Jim, it was implied, represented all that was right and good in American culture and democracy. Drawing on writings by novelists, literary scholars, journalists, and historians, Arac revisits the era of the novels setting in the 1840s, the period in the 1880s when Twain wrote and published the book, and the postWorld War II era, to refute many deeply entrenched assumptions about Huckleberry Finn and its place in cultural history, both nationally and globally. Encompassing discussion of Harriet Beecher Stowe, Frederick Douglass, Ralph Ellison, Archie Bunker, James Baldwin, Shelley Fisher Fishkin, and Mark Fuhrman, Aracs book is trenchant, lucid, and timely.

A grab bag collection of musings and meanderings on Mark Twain and his continuing cultural influences. But Fishkin (American Studies/Univ. of Texas, Austin) seems too often more preoccupied with herself than with her subject. By the end of the book, we know about her likes and dislikes, her career, travels (to Twain's native Hannibal, Mo., and elsewhere in search of Twain and his legacy), family, and, by the way, some of her interesting ideas on Twain. These non-Fishkin-focused sections are largely taken up with an original and vigorous defense of Twain against charges of racism. That such a defense is even necessary is a sad commentary on our age's unironic obtuseness (Huckleberry Finn has been banned in many school districts): If a book contains the word ``nigger,'' well then it must be a wicked book and the author a wicked man. Fishkin ably lays waste to these canards, turning up in the process irrefutable evidence of Twain's strong hatred of racism. Critics have often assailed Huckleberry Finn's long final section, in which Jim, not aware that he has been freed, is humiliated by Tom Sawyer, but Fishkin convincingly reads this as a satire of Reconstruction. Still, Fishkin's overwhelming emphasis on Twain as an ``antiracist writer'' is ultimately part of the same flawed zeitgeist that wrongly condemns him for racism. One of the 19th century's most original minds, Twain had a talent and breadth of his concerns that ranged far beyond such easy delineations. Fishkin gives some sense of this, but she is too concerned with boxing Twain into the narrow categories our age seems to demand. Despite Fishkin's scholarship and intelligence, Twain's own words on his work are perhaps the best: ``Persons attempting to find a motive in this narrative will be prosecuted; persons attempting to find a moral in it will be banished; persons attempting to find a plot in it will be shot.'' - Mark and Livy : The Love Story of Mark Twain and the Woman Who Almost Tamed Him

Resa Willis / Unknown Binding / Published (Unknown)
(Publisher Out Of Stock)
Twain's domestic years (1870-1904) were not what he considered his best. But in spite of illness and financial stress, they were the years when he wrote the novels and stories he is remembered for--works that, according to Willis (Literature/Drury College) in this slight and sentimental story, were edited and inspired by Olivia ``Livy'' Langdon, Twain's wife, whom he called ``angel'' and ``gravity.'' Recovering from ``neurasthenia,'' a form of weakness that afflicted upper-class, intellectually repressed Victorian women, Livy entered a ``classic'' marriage as the ``civilizing'' influence on a hard-drinking, smoking, swearing, sociable dreamer who liked to travel. She decorated his homes, entertained his friends, toured Europe and the world with him as he lectured and wrote, and provided the fortune that allowed them to live so well on an editor's salary--a fortune he lost on the ill-fated Paige typesetting machine. Livy also bore four children: a son who died in infancy and three emotionally crippled daughters, also tamed in odd ways--at age four, the oldest was ``whipped'' daily in the bathroom with a ``hairbrush or papercutter.'' Although Livy's dark side--her elitist, tyrannical, and repressive nature--is obvious, the love story Willis claims to offer is not. Rather, there is a record of holidays (not very festive), expenses, travels, domestic chores, visits, visitors, griefs, and all possible illnesses--from pinkeye to epilepsy--and the medical foolishness with which many of them were treated. The best story, only implicit here, is not the taming of Mark but the liberation of Livy, the adventure of being Mrs. Clemens, especially the lecture tour around the world with all the bizarre escapades in Fiji, Tasmania, Africa, and India, lovingly related in Following the Equator, a Twain work that does not even appear in Willis's bibliography, with the voyage itself squeezed between Twain's carbuncles and daughter Susy's death. This book provides an overview of Mark Twain's work and a close critical analysis of his major texts, and includes chapters on Huckleberry Finn, A Connecticut Yankee and Puddn'head Wilson. Using recent cultural and literary theory to re-examine Twain's travel-writing and fictions, and written in a refreshingly jargon-free and accessible manner, Peter Messent begins by discussing one of Twain's oddest but most comic short stories, 'The Stolen White Elephant'. This tale of an elephant on the loose, causing havoc wherever it goes, and hunted by the logical but myopic Detective Blunt, serves as a revealing point of entry to Twain's narratives as a whole, with their stress on shifting perspective, incongruity and constant undecideability.

Tom Quirk(Editor) / Hardcover / Published June 1997

Tom Quirk's study provides a comprehensive analysis of the comic genius and narrative originality that makes Mark Twain's short fiction a cornerstone of the American literary tradition. Quirk's presentation of Twain's career as a writer of short fiction is complemented with selections of Twain's essays rounds out this balanced and informative work. Quirk's aim in Mark Twain: A Study of the Short Fiction is to provide a "descriptive account of Twain's imaginative energies and his literary development as they are revealed in his short fiction." His selections of Twain's writing provide excellent examples of the literary energy that Quirk so vividly describes.

How did Mark Twain develop his remarkable oral style of writing that was so carefully crafted? And what can we learn about nineteenth-century America from the public speeches of his humorist and teacher who charmed the country and exported his notions of Americanism around the world? This is the very first book-length critical analysis to deal exclusively with Twain's public speaking. It brings him again as it were, to the center stage. The book offers an analysis of his rhetoric, lectures, occasional speeches, and summarizes his impact on the listeners in his time. Sixteen selected speeches exemplify his varied styles as a communicator. A chronology, lengthy bibliographical essay, and a general index are also included.

Mark Twain : The Man and His Adventures
Richard B. Lyttle / School & Library Binding / Published January 1995
Price: $15.95 - Usually ships in 24 hours
In this richly detailed biography, Lyttle (Ernest Hemingway, 1992, etc.) gives young readers a Mark Twain whose life, like Huck Finn's, was defined by the American paradox: Nearly every freedom came burdened with a sense of responsibility. Seeking a hiding place for the day while ditching school, the young Sam Clemens went to his father's office only to discover a dead body on the floor- -punishment, he assumed, for his truancy. Yet an overdeveloped conscience hardly conquered Clemens's searching, independent spirit. Lyttle chronicles thoroughly--and with refreshingly little sentimentality--Clemens's stint as a Mississippi River boat pilot, his travels west as a prospector, and his work as a journalist, from which he gradually transformed himself into Mark Twain. Lyttle carefully notes the complexity of this persona, who played to packed houses with his painstakingly rehearsed, seemingly offhand speeches and who created some of the most lasting fiction in our literature. Lyttle's treatment of Twain's work, however, is stingy by comparison. He covers The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn in only a handful of paragraphs and oblique references (``He continued to read evening installments about the young prince [in The Prince and the Pauper] to his family, but he had too many misgivings to read the Finn story to them''). Still, Lyttle has delivered a superb portrait of the man. (Biography. 10+) -- Copyright ©1994, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

These collections of essays, selected and introduced by distinguished scholars, made the most informative and provocative critical work on each writer easily available to students, scholars, and the general public. Now the New Century Views series, co-edited by Richard Brodhead and Maynard Mack, offers volumes of the same excellence for the contemporary moment. Each volume captures and makes accessible the most stimulating critical writing of our time on crucial literary figures of the past and present. Also included in each is an introduction to the author's life and work, a chronology of important dates, and a selected bibliography. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

- Mark Twain and the Art of the Tall Tale

Henry B. Wonham / Hardcover / Published March 1993
Price: $49.95 - Usually ships in 24 hours
Mark Twain and the Art of the Tall Tale explores a predominantly American comic strategy and its role in Mark Twain's fiction. Focusing on the writer's experiments with narrative structure, Wonham describes how Twain manipulated conventional approaches to reading and writing by engaging his audience in a series of rhetorical games - the rules of which he adapted from the conventions of the tall tale in American oral and written traditions. After surveying the rich history of yarn-spinning in America, Wonham traces Twain's appropriation of the genre through the course of his career, from The Innocents Abroad to Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn, and Pudd'nhead Wilson. He contends that as Twain turned from short sketches to extended travelogues and quasi-fiction, he found in the tall tale a means of dramatizing his disparate comic material. Later, as Twain worked consciously to purge his writing of its anecdotal quality, the oral genre remained central to his imagination - less as a source of comic material than as a paradigmatic encounter between competing points of view, an encounter that resonates throughout the author's major fiction. Offering an original interpretation of Twain's narrative and rhetorical techniques, this absorbing and readable study will interest Twain enthusiasts and students of nineteenth-century American literature, as well as anyone interested in American humor and oral narrative traditions.

- Mark Twain, Culture and Gender : Envisioning America Through Europe

J. D. Stahl / Hardcover / Published January 1994
Price: $35.00 Back Ordered
Often regarded as the quintessential American author, Mark Twain in fact mined his knowledge and experience of Europe as assiduously as he did his adventures on the Mississippi and in the American West. In this challenging and original study, J. D. Stall looks closely at various Twain works with European settings and traces the manner in which the great writer redefined European notions of class into American concepts of gender, identity, and society. Stahl not only examines such famous writings as The Innocents Abroad, The Prince and the Pauper, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, and the "Mysterious Stranger" manuscripts but also treats a number of neglected works, including 1601, "A Memorable Midnight Experience," and Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc. In these writings, Stahl shows, Twain utilized the terms and symbols of European society and history to express his deepest concerns involving father-son relationships, the legitimation of parentage, female political and sexual power, the victimization of "good" women, and, ultimately, the desire to bridge or even destroy the barriers between the sexes. The "exoticism" of foreign culture - with its kings and queens, priests, and aristocrats - furnished Twain with some especially potent images of power, authority, and tradition. These images, Stahl argues, were "plastic material in Mark Twain's hands," enabling the writer to explore the uncertainties and ambiguities of gender in America: what it meant to be a man in Victorian America; what Twain thought it meant to be a woman; how men and women did, could, and should relate to each other. Stahl's approach yields a wealth of fresh insights into Twain's work. In discussing The Innocents Abroad, for example, he analyzes the emergence of the "Mark Twain" persona as part of a quest for cultural authority that often took the form of sexual role-playing. He also demonstrates that The Prince and the Pauper, even more strikingly than The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, embodies the writer's central myth of orphaned sons searching for surrogate fathers. His reading of A Connecticut Yankee is a tour de force, uncovering the psychological contradictions in Twain's political aspirations toward democratic equality. Stahl's book is an important contribution to literary scholarship, informed by psychology, gender study, cultural theory, and traditional Twain criticism. It confirms Mark Twain's debt to European culture even as it illuminates his re-envisioning of that culture in his own uniquely American way.
