The authors of several handsomely illustrated historical biographies (Good Queen Bess, 1989) take on an unusually demanding subject with intelligence, scrupulous regard for the historical record, and a wise eye to the interests of their audience. Emphasizing how little is known for sure about Shakespeare, they phrase their straightforward text to make admirably clear the boundaries of fact and the bases for plausible conjecture, often commenting on what, interestingly, is not known (``No one knows when he left [Stratford for London] or under what circumstances''). Summarizing the most significant events, they illuminate them with well chosen, often intriguing details and tell as much about the Elizabethan theater as about the playwright. Stanley's elegant illustrations are especially well suited to the topic; she uses details of Tudor architecture and costume to richly decorative effect, while her artfully structured compositions and somewhat stylized figures harmonize well with the theatrical topic. An excellent ``Postscript'' discusses the evolution of Shakespeare's English, his own inventions (e.g., ``majestic,'' ``leapfrog,'' ``gloomy'') and the continuing ubiquity of his vivid descriptions. In his search for the historical Bard of Avon, religious historian Wilson (Jesus: The Evidence, 1991) penetrates the Elizabethan stage's shadow world with some success but tendentiously turns Shakespeare into a cypher for crypto-Catholic theories. Beginning with scholarly straw men (the Francis Bacon theories of authorship and the Stratford tourism version of Shakespeare), Wilson delves deeply into Shakespeare studies to recreate the world of the acting company, suggesting with some justification that the apprentice bard may have acted more important roles in much more elaborate and historically accurate productions in the newly discovered Rose theater than previously believed; Wilson also describes the bustling Elizabethan literary life of competitive poets and noble patrons. In a conjectural opening move for his crypto-Catholic theory, Wilson proposes the possibly recusant noble Ferdinando Stanley as Shakespeare's mysterious first patron who introduced him into the conspiracy-ridden court scene, which would later involve the playwright with the Essex rebellion. While Wilson rightly cites the uncertain post-Reformation stance of provincial Stratford, he oversimplifies the breadth and complexity of the Elizabethan experience with Catholic revisionism and reads highly tenuous interpretations into Shakespeare's texts, such as dubious references to Mary, Queen of Scots in King John or a pro-Jesuit reading of the porter scene in Macbeth. Most disingenuously Wilson obscures well-known evidence conflicting with his theory: He avoids the paper trail of an early multi-authored play, The Booke of Sir Thomas More, that links Shakespeare with Anthony Munday, a literary hack whom Wilson consistently vilifies for his pro-Protestant Elizabethan espionage; and he omits the fact that the London family whom Shakespeare lodged with for many years were Huguenots--which would have been an absurd risk for a recusant. Despite unearthing some controversial historical possibilities, Wilson ultimately displays as much wishful thinking in making Shakespeare a crypto-Catholic as others have in attributing his plays to Francis Bacon. Although more than 300 books have disputed the authorship of poems and plays most often attributed to Shakespeare, Matus (the scholarly Shakespeare, 1991--not reviewed) now offers what he believes should be the final one, presenting an irrefutable Shakespeare who was himself and not the 56 others--scholars, royals, obscure geniuses--put forth in his stead. Matus's primary challenge here is to the 17th Earl of Oxford- -and to the camp of scholars, the ``Oxfordians,'' who support him. Matus's mastery of the Elizabethan Age, and especially of its publishing and theater history, gives him an edge. He establishes the ``paper trail'' left by Shakespeare as both actor and playwright; left by the stationers (printers) involved in publishing the plays; by the scripts and their relationship to performances; and by the reluctance of actors and their companies to publish plays that would break their monopoly on production. The value of Matus's argument lies in these fine observations and in the mass of evidence he accumulates about other playwrights, their sources in antiquity and contemporary Europe, and their performance history and practice--all the while challenging the Oxfordians. In this context, Matus reconstructs Shakespeare's reputation, theater, profession, editions, and performances, and he explores the distinctions between scholarship and performance, as well as between theater and drama. Scholars, he concludes, created ``bardolatry,'' inflating Shakespeare's talent and achievement, and then proposed other authors to account for this image of a genius. When viewing Shakespeare as playwright in his own time, it's possible, Matus says, to appreciate the historical man as the industrious author of his works. Finally, Matus criticizes his own art--the art of scholarship--and advocates knowing Shakespeare primarily through performance. A well-defined and fascinating populist argument that makes Shakespeare accessible as a hard-working and clever man of the theater.
